Doughnuts for Civil Liberties Defense Center

 

Recently we had a little fun and fundraiser for Civil Liberties Defense Center. I simply bought a few dozen of the finest doughnuts from Oregon's famous Voodoo Doughnuts. We had bacon maple bars for the meat lovers and the vintage Danish teak tray in the front of the table is filled with Vegan doughnuts. Everyone stuffed themselves full of doughnuts for a great cause. We raised about $400 with just about 30 people and a bunch of doughnuts. It was a small effort but every little bit counts for small non-proftis that operate on a lean budget but who also pack a strong punch where it matters. In the case of CLDC they are constantly working to educate the community about our civil liberties. I love a great excuse to eat a great doughnut!  

    

Mod Livin' in Denver: Part 1 Lee Alex Decor

Friends, it's hump day and while I found little modern living inspiration in between my meetings today my mind occasionally wandered back a few weeks in time to Denver C - O. For work I went but a few hours I stole back to visit a couple of stores that I wanted to share with you so that next time you're in DenCo (they love their abbreviated neighborhoods there) you can check out their vintage scene. First Up, Lee Alex Decor! You can find this vintage modern shop in SoBo (aka Baker Neighborhood from what I can tell - S. Broadway St.). I did a lot of toe tapping in the store to the funky beats that Lee has on while you shop. The store was immediately welcoming and it seemed like everyone who walked in was a regular and in fact I felt like one even though it was my first time there! Lee was super nice and pointed out these amazingly gorgeous candlesticks with a big O on the bottom for Rude Osolnik (1915-2001) that he had just picked up. They were indeed elegant and surprisingly sturdy. While I did not pick up the Tulipwood candle holders I brought back a singleton of Danish derivation. There is a picture here at Etsy ShopVintageStyle that sold back in 2009 of the same family. Maybe the coolest thing about talking to Lee was his seeing his tattoo! Check it out below. This cat is dedicated to his Vintage Modern aesthetic and it was wonderful to meet him and check out the store that he and his wife have worked to pull together. Danish Teak Sideboard - To Purchase or Not to Purchase?

Well I've got a birthday coming up and I was thinking about making a special request from Mr. Monkey. I found this Danish Teak sideboard on Craigslist for $375 dollars. I'm going to go check it out this evening. I'll look for stamps or labels to help identify. But if I can't find a stamp or a label the question is - is it worth it? Anything over $200 dollars I have to really pause and think about it. Apparently it is about 60 inches long and 18 inches deep and I think it's just too long for our small house. I was thinking about using it as a dresser for clothes instead of a traditional sideboard. It's just so pretty. I've tried researching a little on the web and so far I've found similar styles but no exact matches so pricing is proving a challenge.  Here's a close up of the recessed handles. I love the dual colored stains and the rounded corners. 

UPDATE: So after much deliberation and help from fellow MCM junkies on Lotta Livin'. I rested on the idea that the sideboard was in fact a G plan from England designed by a Danish designer, Ib Kodof Larsen. I contacted the seller to say that I would have to pass (it didn't fit in the designated space). The next day they had reposted the piece for $50 dollars cheaper so I contacted them via email and told them what web research and Lotta Livin' people had turned up and that they should look for the red label etc. and call a MCM dealer, etc. Anyway they did and they found the red label!!! Which they were going to tear off!!!! The couple was thrilled that they had such a great MCM find and now they are more likely to find someone to take it who would truly appreciate it. Of course I'm sad to see such a sweet piece go, but I'm thrilled to know that unique MCM furniture does exist for great prices on Eugene's Craigslist.  And they all lived happily ever after!
